Michael Blasingame’s Positive Impact

One of our major tenets at Baptist Health is to make a positive impact on the world around you. There are many ways our employees can do this: working at the bedside, creating innovative healthcare software, or finding the perfect care plan for our patients. For Michael Blasingame, his impact is measured on more than his already phenomenal RN career. His impact can be measured by the smiles on our patient’s faces when he takes out his guitar. One thing I love to do is incorporate music into geriatric behavioral health. I love the guitar—I’ve been playing it since I was nine years old—and sometimes I just take out my guitar and play old songs. For some of our patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s, they have difficulty remembering their names, but if you play an old folk song on the guitar they’ll sing every word. I love seeing their reactions when I play. The guitar may be a new element to Michael’s brand of care, but his history of healthcare is much longer than that. He first started as a LPN in a long-term care facility, and that’s where his passion for behavioral health was able to grow.I’ve always loved working with behavioral health ever since I started learning about it in nursing school. There’s a real need for behavioral healthcare in our community. It’s somewhere that I knew I would fit well. Seeing that need, Michael worked hard and graduated with a RN degree almost six years ago. He joined our team as an RN for the geriatric population, but as of just last month he was promoted to Nurse Manager of Adult Psychiatry. The opportunity just came up. I worked hard, and Baptist Health is a place that rewards hard work. It’s exciting to be in this new role. I want to continue to make a positive contribution to the Baptist Health system by being a Nurse Manager. And Michael does just that with the help of his team members.“Team members” is the best way to describe it. We are on a team here. It’s multidisciplinary too; it’s not just nurses and managers, it’s Environmental Services, therapists, anyone who is part of the Baptist Health family. We all work together to serve the community. It’s hard to stop Michael from not impacting his community. When he’s not at Baptist Health, you can find him working with his church on various outreach programs. As a matter of fact, Michael just helped kick off the football season for the local high school with a huge tailgate event.“We cooked a ton of hamburgers and hot dogs for about 70 kids and their families. It was a really great time,” Michael happily reported. Are you looking for a career that gives you opportunities to do more? Visit our Career Site and see what opportunities we have for you. You may be lucky enough to hear one of Michael’s songs at the next RN event!
