Alex Harper started as a Nursing Assistant before becoming a Neurodiagnostic Tech at Baptist Health. From the beginning he says, it’s always been a true culture of care and wanted to share his experience with us.
My department is more like a family. We actually refer to ourselves as our ‘boss’s daycare’ because we’re all a bunch of children with adult jobs,” he says fondly, “Debbi is like our mother – we even have a photo of all of us that’s in her office!
Alex says the team at Baptist Health is very encouraging and every challenge is met with a can-do attitude and support from the team. “Whenever there is a problem, there’s usually at least two people rushing to help you with it. Sometimes we have really complicated challenges and it’s great that someone is always there to encourage you through it.”Baptist Health believes in a healthy work-life balance for all of our employees and we understand that family comes first. Alex went on to talk about how he feels he’s supported as a family man at Baptist Health. “We’re also encouraged to take care of our personal life. Whenever there is something going on at home or with a family member, we know we’ll be supported and encouraged to go and focus on those things.” Alex adds, “Baptist Health also gives us time off for our professional development, which is great. Or if you ever need time to go to the chapel and talk to someone, the time is available to you.Alex also tells us about career development at Baptist Health and how it’s an all-in team effort. “We have an awesome staff of physicians who will teach you as well as supervisors, who will sit down with you and help you prepare for your boards and make sure you’re ready to succeed.”To help with the day to day management of things, Alex says Baptist Health provides opportunities such ice cream socials, prayer services, and other treats to give their employees an opportunity to recharge. “It’s an environment that makes you feel valued and like you’re always supported.”As a Senior Tech, Alex has the opportunity to really support his junior techs. “We see a lot of tough situations from day to day, even if can just buy someone a cup of coffee after a long day, I want them to know I’m here to help.” The support system at Baptist Health is important to the mission of quality care and our employees know that in order to succeed they have to support one another. The faith-based community of Baptist Health also helps with the overall environment of care.Alex is inspired to come to work every day because of how he’s able to provide solutions for patients. “The best part of the job is when I’m able to find a diagnosis for a patient. From that point, we know how to treat it. Though a small victory, it is a victory.” Alex says he’s learned that being a patient can be terrifying but by having someone who shows compassion, the process can become less scary. He tries to provide that atmosphere whether it’s laughing with them or giving them more information about a procedure to put their minds at ease.Alex feels comfortable and supported working at Baptist Health. “It makes it so much easier to do my job and to do a job well. We don’t want to disappoint the patient, nor do we want to disappoint each other.”Outside of work, Alex spends time with his daughter or enjoying a great book. “Baptist Health is a great place to work and Arkansas is beautiful. You’re never far away from nature or intown entertainment. I couldn’t be happier.”If you want to find your home away from home, apply today!
