Get Hands-On Experience and Real-World Training Through a Nursing Externship

Are you a dedicated nursing student with at least two semesters completed? At Baptist Health, we offer a hands-on Nursing Externship Program where you’ll gain valuable clinical experience under the direct supervision of our skilled registered nurses.

During the program, you’ll play an important role in patient care—assisting with bathing, mobility, vital sign monitoring, and meal support—all while strengthening your communication and teamwork skills. This is your chance to make a meaningful impact on patients' lives while advancing your nursing career.

Extern Program Requirements:

Two Semesters Completed – You must be enrolled in an accredited nursing program and have finished atleast two semesters of medical-surgical clinical rotations

CPR Certifications – A current CPR certification is required.

GPA Requirements – Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher(or at least a C in your courses).

Soft Skills & Documentation – Good organizational, verbal, and writtencommunication skills, the ability to work effectively with a healthcare team,and completion of all required documentation and paperwork.

Practicuum Hours – A commitment of at least 6 weeks (216 hours) from June to August.

Start Strong with the Baptist Health Fellowship Program

At Baptist Health, we’re committed to helping you succeed. That’s why our Fellowship Program offers extended, hands-on training in your chosen specialty. With expert mentorship and advanced experience, you’ll gain the skills, confidence, and support to thrive in your career.

Explore the specialty of Emergency Nursing through our ED Fellowship. The program is designed to assist you in achieving the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to gain confidence in the emergency department and ensure the safety and quality of emergent patient care. The fellowship is structured around a standardized framework of blended learning strategies and unit-based precepted orientation, based on the principles of adult learning theory and active learning methodologies. At Baptist Health, we center our fellowship program around the orientee and orientation, aligning with the Mission, Vision, and Philosophy of the Baptist Health System.

The fellowship will meet daily for two weeks from 08:30-17:00. During this time, you will learn focused assessment and required interventions.

Monthly, the fellowship group will meet for education, simulation, debriefing, and questions. Learning needs are reviewed, identified, and clinical activities are focused on addressing those needs.

Upon completion of orientation, the orientation manual will be jointly completed by the Manager/Supervisor and the Educator (if applicable) and reviewed with the orientee.

The ED Fellowship will be one year in length, featuring monthly meetings with coordinators and educators.

The Perioperative RN Fellowship at Baptist Health-LR enhances the knowledge and skills of newly hired RNs for the safety of surgical patients. It follows a standardized framework, combining adult learning theory and active methodologies, with a focus on the orientee and alignment with Baptist Health's Mission, Vision and Philosophy. The orientation pathway at our facility is the roadmap for the orientation process.

It sets the minimum standards for all circulating nurses and adopts a team approach with the orientee, preceptor, manager and educator. It tracks competence and learning needs to ensure the orientee becomes safe, competent and knowledgeable during orientation.

The Women's Health Fellowship Program at Baptist Health provides specialized training through two distinct tracks: the Perinatal RN Fellowship, focused on labor and delivery, and the Neonatal RN Fellowship, designed for nurses entering the NICU.

Perinatal RN Fellowship: A one-year program designed for new graduates or those transitioning into labor and delivery. It includes didactic lectures, clinical assessments, simulation labs, case studies, mentorship, and performance improvement projects to support skill development in prenatal care.

Neonatal RN Fellowship: Tailored for new graduates or nurses entering the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), this program combines four days of in-class instruction, hands-on simulations, and 18 specialized lectures to equip RNs with the skills and confidence needed for neonatal care.

RN Graduate Residency: Transition to Practice Program

Our Transition to Practice Program is designed to bridge the gap between academics and real-world nursing, helping you develop critical thinking skills, enhance your clinical expertise, and build confidence in patient care.

After graduation, this six-month program includes:

Four classes to reinforce keynursing concepts

A guided clinical experiencewith a dedicated preceptor

An evidence-based project todeepen your understanding of best practices

Program completion and clinicalladder advancement to recognize your growth

Occupational Therapy Assistant

Occupational therapy assistants make a difference in people’s lives by helping them be as independent as possible when physical, psychological, or social challenges prevent them from doing everyday things that give their lives meaning. They work with clients from newborn to older adults in a variety of settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, schools, and nursing homes.

Patient Care Technician

Patient Care Technicians, or PCTs, work under the supervision of nurses, advanced practice personnel, and physicians to provide direct patient care of basic needs, draw labs, and perform electrocardiograms.

Sleep Technology

Sleep Technology, also called Polysomnographic (PSG) Technology, is an allied health specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders.  PSG techs operate a variety of electronic monitoring devices, record brain (EEG) and cardiac (ECG) activity, breathing, blood oxygen levels, muscle activity, eye movements, and other physiological events during a sleep study.  Most Sleep Techs work overnight shifts and are responsible for providing all patient care associated with the outpatient procedure.

Surgical Technology

Working as part of the surgical team under the direct supervision of a surgeon or registered nurse, the surgical technologist anticipates the needs of the surgeon, utilizes surgical equipment, and provides for the needs of the patient and surgical team.
